Davis Islands is plural because it was built up on two man made islands formerly known as Little Grassy Key and Big Grassy Key at the mouth of the Hillsborough River. The islands were built from dredging mud from Tampa Bay. This massive undertaking in the 1920's during the height of the Florida land boom was done by D.P. Davis, a wealthy speculator and Tampa native. His vision that he planned was an upscale resort community with hotels, airport, golf course and swimming pool. Unfortunately for D.P. Davis, the Florida land boom went bust and and major financial struggles ensued. He mysteriously fell overboard on a transatlantic crossing and was never found.

Harbour Island was originally known as Seddon Island and was named after W.L. Seddon who was the chief engineer for Seaboard Air Line railroad. Now Harbour Island has a small commercial district and there are two small bridges that take you back to the mainland towards downtown Tampa and the Channelside District.

In December of 1924. the Tampa Sunday Times reported: ‘Beach Park, one of the most pretentious of all the subdivisions marks the entrance to the Interbay Peninsula. It is situated on Old Tampa Bay just off Memorial Highway. A little over a year ago this property was a wild tropical garden, impregnable and uninhabitable.' The Beach Park Company were the developers and most important to them was the requirement that all homes built be examples of Mediterranean design. No hotels or apartments would be allowed. Residents could keep up to ten chickens, but no roosters and one horse per residence was permitted as long as the stable did not bother the neighbors.
